While it's horrible that Bottas' back is out and he couldn't compete in Australia, the one upside that I was expecting to come out of it was the first woman in a race seat in twenty years. Reserve drivers don't usually do well these days because of the lack of mileage that they can get with current regulations. For example, Heikki Kovaleinan's Lotus stint at the end of 2013 when Lotus were extremely competitive and giving Red Bull a run for their money ended with two pointless runs. Susie Wolff has more mileage in the current car than anyone bar Massa and Bottas, so she seems like the likely fill, however Williams are not having it. They have not named anyone, but I'd expect it to be Pascal Wehrlein given Williams' increasingly close ties to Mercedes and Mercs' apparent desire to get him mileage as shown by them paying Force India to come out and run him. Whatever. It is what it is. I just thought that it would be nice, and would have been amusing to see a scantily clad grid boy.

Susie couldn't race today because:

She doesn't have a super license.

There are no substitutions between quali and race.

Will she ever get a super license?

http://motorsportstalk.nbcsports.com/2015/02/20/sus…

Under the new [license] system, drivers are awarded points depending on their finishing position in other championships. A score of 40 is required over three years in established series such as GP2, GP3 and IndyCar.

As a result, Wolff will be ineligible for a super licence given that her most recent competitive season came in 2012 when she finished 22nd in the DTM championship, a series that does not score points under this system.

Speaking exclusively to MotorSportsTalk, Wolff said that she was not worried about the new requirements and will simply deal with the situation as and when it arises.

"No, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it," Wolff said. "If I need a super licence, then I will cross that bridge.

I know why she couldn't race today. I'm talking about Malaysia. She does qualify for a superlicense, and has one at the moment. If she didn't have one, she wouldn't be able to participate in a GP weekend like she did last year when she drove in FP1. The problem is that the regulations don't allow for it next year because her current qualification is based on mileage.

Really? When did she get it?

1000 km of running in the young driver's test in 2013 along with straight ling aero tests, I think. I know she has one, because you can't participate in a free practice without it.

Ah, I think I get it.

She doesn't qualify for the 2016 Superlicence.

Yep, she'll be SOL next year unless she gets five race start this year, but as of now, she does have one. I was looking at the rules though, because I thought that there was a way to override it with a vote, but it looks like they changed the requirements again.

he driver must also satisfy at least one of the following

requirements:

a)

have made at least 5 starts in races counting for the FIA Formula

One World Championship for Drivers the previous year, or at

least 15 starts within the previous 3 years.

b)

have previously held the Super Licence and have been the

regular test driver with an F1 World Championship team for the

previous year.

c)

have been classified, within the previous 2 years, in the first

3 of the final classification of: the F2 Championship, or the

International F3 Trophy, or the GP2 Series, or the GP2 Asia

So it looks like she now qualifies for it either way?
